| Bottled water companies spend billions of dollars every year trying to convince consumers that bottled water is "purer" "healthier" and all around better for you than tap water. They lure us in with pictures of mountains, water falls and springs. In truth, bottled water comes from the same place our tap water comes from: our rivers and ground water.
Tap water and Bottled water: > Tap water is recycled while bottled water is not. >It takes 5 liters of water to make one liter of bottled water >Tap water is monitored and tested regularly; there is less than one person regulating the entire bottled water system. >Bottled water is shipped and transported everywhere which leaves a very large carbon footprint. >The bottled water industry accounts for 2.5% of the world's oil consumption. >Tap water is pumped as needed; bottled water is pumped unlimitedly. >Toxins from the plastic bottle soak into the water. >After use, plastic bottles pill up in land fills and at the bottom of oceans. CORPORATE THEFT In 2000, the global bottled water industry made over 20 billion dollars in profit; they do this yearly by stealing our free water and then selling it back to us for extreme profit. Throughout the United States, bottled water corporations go into small towns and pump their groundwater; leaving nothing but mud flats in their place. This water is not theirs; moreover, the company does not pay taxes to contribute to the town in which they are pumping. Poland Spring water came into Fryeburg Maine and pumped their groundwater; afterwards, the company gave a case of bottled water to the first 50 people who came to visit the plant. The town’s people took these cases of water, went to the local river and poured all the water back into the river where it belonged. In 2001, Nestle company went into Michigan and started pumping 200 gallons of water per minute. The town's people were outraged and took the company to court. The people original won the case but a couple of days later the decision was appealed and Nestle was given the green light to go right back to pumping water. The same thing has happened in Wisconsin, Florida, New Hampshire and many other states around America. THE SOLUTION: Stop the bottled water industry and focus on providing cleaning, cheaper and more sustainable tap water for all. |
